I hope the scenes that they didn’t show would be effectively utilized (or replaced with something short but poignant?) when they become important. But I cared more for Sheila’s death in the anime than in the manga, where I went “lol” and skipped reading most of Marcos’ angst as he punched a roach’s head off. It didn’t quite work for me with Elena’s death because I saw a hilarious Space Jam edit prior to watching that episode. Elena’s extra scene in episode 2 set-up her character before she died (albeit briefly) and Alex’s extra scene in the same episode set-up the importance of baseball to him and Marcos. They’re my favorite squad.īut the show tries to make up for the lack of pre-Mars bonding with short but almost equally effective scenes. They’re very militaristic, but they also have this fun family dynamic. I really wanted to see was more of the Russians. There’s Akari and the sick child he befriended, Adolf calling his wife, more of Alex and Marcos’ past, and Sylvester pissing in the shower. I wish they could have shown more scenes of the crew’s life on Earth. Minus the censorship (that could probably easily be removed for the Blu-ray or eventual uncensored Crunchyroll release), this is most of what I wanted for the animated version of Terra Formars. Animation-wise and story-wise, it’s still a pretty solid show. The censorship is ridiculous, but the combined censored scenes in all four episodes don’t even make it to five minutes. But a similar scene will probably only last a few seconds in an animated medium, because there are time constraints to what can be shown in an episode. It won’t move until you turn the page, which makes the scene feel longer than it actually is. When you’re shown a panel filled with gore and guts in a manga, you can take all the time you want to process the scene.

I think, as someone who’s read the manga, that my skepticism towards censorship was overblown by the difference between the anime and manga mediums when it comes to the amount of time you could spend on one scene.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy this series as much as I did. I’ve seen the not-so-stellar BUGS II OVA. I’ve seen the hilarious edits to Elena’s death scene. Making this blog post has changed what I feel about the Terra Formars anime. They did cut off the line Akari taught Sheila to say. Censorship laws seem to allow on-screen roach deaths. Mexican Spider-man > Japanese Spider-man > that guy who got nicknamed “Spider-man” when it might really just be a tick. Technical aspects explained by two dudes back on Earth.
